Tuta Absoluta is a new pest that arrived in Mozambique around 4-5 years ago and has devastated tomato crops everywhere where tomatoes are cultivated. It has led to crop losses of up to 100%
It originated in South America about 20 years ago and then spread to Europe and from there came down through Africa.
At first it was reasonably well controlled by the spraying of certain chemicals in all 12 associations of Gaza Works but within 3-4 years became resistant to all the known pesticides due to its short life cycle (<30 days) as well as the lack of adherence to the global IRAC (Insecticide Resistance Action Committee) spraying guidelines.
A Gaza Works é uma ONG que tem como principais áreas de atuação o Desenvolvimento da Igreja, Agricultura e Saúde. A GW, trabalha em 4 Distritos (Chibuto, Guija, Mabalane e Massingir) na Província de Gaza em Moçambique e a sua sede está no Distrito de Chókwè.
A GW é de âmbito Provincial e congrega em forma de Umbrela, 12 associações agrícolas.
